Abstract
In the United States, one in four preschoolers are dual language learners (DLLs) who are exposed to a language other than English at home (U.S. census, 2018). Parents play an important role in supporting children’s dual language development (Li, 2006). It is therefore critical to examine what parents of DLLs know about dual language development. To do so, we developed a new assessment, The Knowledge of Dual Language Development and Education (KnDLE). The current qualitative study aims to gain parental feedback on survey items via cognitive interview. Findings will help refine items and make them relatable to the target population. Participants are parents from diverse backgrounds and had children under 18. The study is on-going. We have interviewed six participants and plan to recruit ten more. Parents were asked to give feedback on the survey.
